For me, the grey showed, but beige worked. The beige is closer to skin tone for me than white. So when you can see through the white shirt, it just looks like skin. If you wear white, it's almost like you're wearing a thicker fabric that is less transparent to where your sleeves end, and then a thinner fabric on your forearms. More @Wikipedia
