Bookmark or Share- Protein feed for deer - cottonseed or protein pellets? - TexAgsReally high in protein and great for building weight back up post rut. The deer absolutely love it. Right now they are selling it around 180-240 a ton depending on what part of the state you're in while a ton of protein is 400 plus dollars - way more bang for your buck.
- Anybody hunt in Crockett County, TX?? - TexAgsI have family that are on 4K acres south of Ozona on Taylor Box Rd. I usually get to go and hunt in early December and in all the years I've been going out there it seems the rut usually takes place the last 2 weeks in November...If you only go out there a couple of times then you absolutely, positively must be there for the Deerfest!!

So the amount of fat a buck has stored going into the rut and the buck oe ratio determines timing of antler casting. We strive for better nutrition, and a more balanced sex ratio.
- Feeding Deer - TexAgsA few very successful people I know only feed cottonseed for a month or two after the rut, to help deer recover and get their bodies back. And then for a while during antler growth. I think food plots, with supplemental feed depending on the forage available is the way to go other than that.
- What is a fallow deer? | TexAgsMature males can be very aggressive to other males during rut and oftentimes will fight to exhaustion or death. That's why, unless raised in controlled pens, it is hard to get really big mature fallows. Very dark meat that some folks like and some don't…. just depends on the person.
