The first 6 months of the mission were dedicated to the all sky-survey (using the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter detector), followed by the pointed phase.
- The ROSAT Mission - NASAROSAT, the ROentgen SATellite, was an X-ray observatory developed through a cooperative program between the Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The satellite was designed and operated by Germany, and was launched by the United States on June 1, 1990.
- The X-ray Satellite ROSAT - Mission - Max Planck SocietyTo perform the survey motion ROSAT rotates in an orbit synchronous way, that means with one revolution per orbit, around the sun vector. This rotation combined with the earth's motion around the sun (about 1° per day) gives the complete sky survey in 180 days.
- The ROSAT Mission - Max Planck SocietyThe German-US-UK X-ray observatory ROSAT (Röntgen Satellite) was launched into a 550 km circular orbit on June 1, 1990. It carried two imaging telescopes operating in the soft X-ray (0.1-2.4 keV) and EUV (0.06-0.2 keV) ranges.
- ROSAT | X-ray Astronomy, Space Telescope, German Aerospace Center ...ROSAT observed the effects of dark matter on the intergalactic medium in a nearby cluster of galaxies. It made the first detection of X-rays from protostars, comets, and the Moon. The ROSAT mission ended on February 12, 1999, and ROSAT reentered Earth’s atmosphere on October 22, 2011.
