Roger B. Taney was a pro-slavery lawyer who served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1836 to 1864. On several occasions he spoke out and ruled in favor of whites over blacks, supported the Confederate states, and blamed Lincoln for their secession. More @Wikipedia
