- Lol, I guess I'm not deer hunting - Texas Gun TalkI decided I'd start the hobby to hunt my own deer, figuring Texas should have plenty of public land to hunt on. Man I should have started looking at the public lands map before I spent days learning about rifles, ballistics, anatomy, field dressing, etc. I can't believe how little property the state has for public hunting!

You can get maps etc from the TPWD, and a booklet when you buy your licenses. I've not heard of anyone taking hog on public land, but it would seem there should be some there. A lot of those tracts have gun restrictions, probably because some are only 40-50 acres.

There's often special hunts on park lands that are not managed by TPWD. These hunts are often very high success rates because the deer are used to seeing park users.
