"Proved" is correct because we parse it as if it said "proved to be". "To be" is implied. Sometimes these omissions don't work well. "He proved a complete stranger" falls into this category, and we prefer to add "to be" explicitly. Sometimes they do work. "The operation proved a success" is an example of this. More @Wikipedia
