Bookmark or Share- Scope recommendations for Prairie Dogs - Long Range Hunting ForumWithin the next couple of days I will be receiving a Savage Axis bolt action in .223. It comes with a 3-9 Weaver scope but I'd like some better optics. I will be shooting 55 grain handloads and wonder what power scope I should be looking at. I will probably limit my shots to
- Long-ish range prairie dog caliber? - Long Range Hunting Forum400-600 yards isn't so far that it takes even a .223/5.56 out of the running for prairie dogs. I shoot quite a bit in windy conditions over prairie dog fields and have used both 5.56 and 22-250 to good effect at those distances and beyond. While the .223/5.56 works just fine, the 22-250 is easier to shoot in the wind.

I use benchmark powder for both bullets and full length size all my cases because I use the same load in three 223 rifles. I like to keep things simple
- Has anyone tried the Prairie Hunter stocks from Boyds?I dont have a prairie hunter but I do have a thumbhole stock from boyds, They are quality built and finished the stock was a drop in fit and did not require any adjustments and the barrel channel is cut to float the barrel. I am going to order another stock for another one of my rem 700's and am going to get it in pepper finish.

Centerfires provide so much more "splat" factor and for economics it's tough to beat the 204 or 223 but the 22-250 gives more consistent acrobatics in my experience, especially over 400 yards. For the long shots it's worth it to take a 6mm or larger.
