I'm an ex-Portillo's employee late to this party (I'm here from a Google search due to being disappointed by my college town Portillo's garden dog), but ask for a side of lettuce, mayo, and American cheese; then ask for a chicken nudie; then ask for a croissant. It's complicated, but it'll give you everything to assemble it on your own!

I was not impressed with Portillo's during my Chicago ...Here's the thing about Portillo's It's not necessarily the best Chicago dog/beef in the city but really, there are no clear standouts. It's recommended to visitors because you can get all over the Chicagoland area, pretty consistently. People have their local favorites but generally agree Portillo's is a good representation of the food they serve.
