It seems that the word 'oriental' has, in North America', come to be used to refer only to material objects (an Oriental rug, etc). Perhaps when you call an Asian person 'Oriental', they feel they are being classified as a commodity and not a human being. But really, I have no idea. In England, I'm pretty sure people say Oriental all the time. More @Wikipedia
