Bookmark or Share- Is there a difference between "opt" and "choose"?About your update: I don't think I'd use an active word like "opt" or "choose" with an inanimate subject like "components". I'm not sure what I'd replace it with; I'd probably rewrite the whole section to avoid this sort of personification in what is presumably a technical document. –
- What is the difference between register, subscribe, sign up and opt-in?Opt-in, I believe, comes from option. Opt-in can be used interchangeably with sign-up. Though I think the distinction is that one needs to be signed up for something before they can option in or option out of a portion of it. Each word signifies a different level or type of involvement. I think we could sum it up in the following sentences:

Both prepositions are used in Wikipedia: Google suggested the creation of a unified approach for opting-out from taking part in Wi-Fi-based positioning systems.
- "Opt Out" or "Opt-Out" - English Language & Usage Stack Exchange"Opt out" without the hyphen would be taken as a verb--that is, to opt out or remove oneself from something. I've opted out of attending the conference. "Opt-out" with the hyphen may be used as a compound adjective: Be sure to make a decision before the opt-out period. Where "opt-out" here describes the period.
