Bookmark or Share- Difference between "hundred", "a hundred", and "one hundred"?In the UK 'a hundred, a hundred and one, a hundred and two' etc is a common style when speaking about 100, 101, 102 etc. This form is also used when writing what has been spoken. 'One hundred' is also used. Either form is also used for 1,000, i.e.'a thousand', or 'one thousand' etc.
- Using hundreds to express thousands: why, where, when?This Google Ngram two hundred thousand vs. two thousand one hundred shows them about equally common and both declining, perhaps in favor of numbers. I don't know how to compare across all possibilities (one thousand three hundred vs. thirteen hundred, etc.), but in text in books, the two forms are roughly equally common.
- Is it improper English to read the number 1100 as "eleven hundred"?You can say nineteen-hundred, but not "twenty-one-hundred". Years are different, and I'd expect the year 2147 to be said as "twenty-one forty-seven". - How do you correctly say large numbersBack in high school my algebra teacher was extremely picky. If we were going to say the number 135, we would say one hundred thirty-five. If a person said one hundred and thirty-five my teacher would interpret that to mean 100.35. Was my algebra teacher wrong, or did Jon just waste over 80 hours counting to 100,000 incorrectly.

On the evidence of these (and other early) Google Books search results, it appears that "one hundred and one" was in use by the second half of the 1600s and that "one hundred one" was in use by the second half of the 1700s.
