Bookmark or Share- "There are more than one people" or "There is more than one people"?Careful - although it may seem that the "more than one" requires that "people" be used as a plural, the correct form is actually the singular form of "people". This is because, while it looks, at first glance, like the sentence goes like this:

Skimming some sites that pop up when searching for Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill I recognized that all those pages do have one in common: They either conclude "No, they didn't" or "Whoever it said". To pick some examples where George Bernard Shaw is named as origin:

- nouns - people are/is: which one is correct? - English Language & Usage ...the SINGULAR sense of people is used to refer to ALL the men, women, and children of a particular tribe, nation, country or ethnic group, speaking of them as a UNIT, and so the phrase a great people is indeed singular. It is a singular count noun. (Okay, people is appears as a phrase in that quotation, but is refers to phrase and not people.)
