Bookmark or Share- grammar - When is "more than one" singular or plural? - English ...A tiny change to the expression more than one changes the agreement on the verb. (10) More than one of the scientists working on a HIV-cure believe in a prompt breakthrough. The Word spell-checker claims that one needs a singular verb in (10). The spell-checker is wrong. When more than one is followed by of and a plural noun, the verb is plural.
- agreement - "one (or many!) thing" vs. "one (or many!) things ...I think "one thing (or many!)" would be the best here. Alternatively, when in a similar situation I will so something like "Thing(s)" to signify that there can be more than one. I don't know the full sentence but maybe try this technique and replace the "thing" with what you actually mean.
- "One thing to note" or "One thing to be noted"?IMO 'one thing to note' has the connotation of 'this is something you should bring your attention to', whereas 'One thing to be noted' seems to mean more of a literal 'take a note(s) on this thing'. That's just my feeling though no concrete evidence to back it up. –
- What is a correct punctuation for a sentence starting with "One more ...One more thing. Don't tell anyone about our conversation (on the subject of this and that ...) This also gives you the facility to maneuver the second part. Where the second part is short, and more important, use a colon to direct attention: One more thing: don't tell her. Where the whole thing is rather simple and short, just include a comma:
- Which is correct: "one or more is" or "one or more are"?With one or more is / are, the first thing to consider is whether 'one or more' is a unit or analysable. It has the near-synonym 'some'; 'four or five' could be substituted reasonably by 'several'. If the substitution of 'some' for 'one or more' is taken as binding, by analogy, we require plural concord.
