North Africa was fertile ground for religious movements for a long time with Kairouan being one of the most important scholarly cities of the Muslim world for a period and the Atlas mountain valleys being able to hide groups of religious dissadents who could also fade away down into the Anti-Atlas or deserts to the south and east.
