Bookmark or Share- NixOS Is A Great Distro For Beginners : r/NixOS - RedditWorking_Report4292. • 8 mo. ago. Hard disagree. I also love NixOS but it is not a good distro for beginners. This OS asks the user to completely re-think the typical relationship between a computer's OS and its apps/services/etc that any beginner would be accustomed to. So they wouldn't just be learning a new OS.

In contrast the Arch approach us entirely different. You get similar configuration file control but without the immutableness and the package system (AUR) isn’t as safe.

I was also thinking of trying out Gentoo since you can build the kernel. I also want to stop the distro-hopping habit too..so I think NixOS could keep me busy for a while. It takes no more effort to install a NixOS distro than any other distro but figuring out how to add packages via the configuration.nix file and do basic configuration changes can be confusing. It has enough of a package selection where I wasn't forced to use Flatpak for anything.
- New User Impressions of NixOS 22.11 as a Desktop OS (long)The real advantage of NixOS is being able to describe your entire system, this is especially useful when you have multiple systems, and being able to treat system state like a git project is incredible useful. For desktop users, this is less useful, because the maintenance-pain-per-machine doesn't have to be super low.
