Bookmark or Share- Getting shocked by a neutral wire - Home Improvement Stack ExchangeTesting H-N would have read 0 volts because the switch leg was deenergized. Testing N-G would also read 0 as they are bonded at the panel and therefore have no voltage potential. You can grab a neutral wire and you won't get shocked, but if you put yourself in series with a neutral wire expect to get bit. Happened to me yesterday.

In a perfect world, with perfect zero-impedance electrical conductors everywhere, there is no voltage between neutral and ground. In that perfect world, you could safely touch the neutral wire. Surprise - we don't live in a perfect world... Electricity transmission doesn't actually have a neutral.

- electrical - In a multi-gang box, are neutral wires paired with ...On new dimmers that are WiFi enabled or smart switches, you do need a neutral (white wire) to go to the switch. It gives a small trickle of power to the switch which allows it to function even while in off position. Pigtail the black, white, and ground wire to each switch.
