You're talking about doing something different, outputting at a resolution below your monitor's native res, and then upscaling to 4K. In that case, 1080p is the ideal rendering res, because you won't get any scaling artifacts, but you'll still be missing out on the features of higher res (more detailed rendering less aliasing).
