Mother Russia has long been familiar as the standard English form of the personification called in Russian Матушка Россия (Россия-матушка, Мать-Россия, Матушка Русь); the use of родина 'motherland' is much less familiar to the English-speaking world and is also ambiguous. More @Wikipedia
