Maastricht is the principal city in the southeastern appendix of the Netherlands and is only 2 miles (3 km) from the Belgian border. It was the site of the Roman settlement Trajectum ad Mosam (“Ford on the Meuse”) and was later the seat of a bishop from 382 to 721. More @Wikipedia
