- Who is he and what is the name of his son? Proverbs 30:4Proverbs is a collection of Solomon's own documented words (Ch 1-24), the words of Solomon copied down (Ch 25-29) and then two short chapters of Agur's and Lemuel's words. Agur ("gatherer") son of Jakeh ("hearkening") speaks to Ithiel ("God is") and to Ucal ("eat"). Agur states his qualifications first. And they are zero. He has none.
- Matthew 26:29: Why is Jesus talking about the wine here?Proverbs 31:1: "The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him." What is important is to reflect on verses 4-5: Proverbs 31:4-5: "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to crave strong drink, lest they drink and forget what is decreed, depriving all the oppressed of justice."
- Were women viewed similar to property in the OT?Women were allowed to teach men. The female leader, Priscilla taught the Apostle Apollos “more adequately”, Acts 18:26. It is significant that Priscilla is listed before her husband, Aquila, in this passage. King Lemuel was taught by his mother, Prov 31:1-9. Women were permitted to pray and prophesy in public meetings, 1 Cor 11:5.
- Is the "woman of valour" in Proverbs 31 "real" or "symbolic"?The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the LORD which, for one who is wise, must be the end of wisdom. For the King and the woman there is a logical conclusion. Lady Wisdom would make the ideal wife and when married, would be the Valiant Wife. If King Lemuel is wise, the woman he chooses as wife will be the ideal woman, Lady Wisdom.
