Bookmark or Share- "Washroom", "restroom", "bathroom", "lavatory", "toilet" or "toilet room"I've always been confused by the terms washroom, restroom, bathroom, lavatory, toilet and toilet room.My impression is that Canadians would rather say washroom while Americans would probably say bathroom or Saint John's in the same situation.
- Is there a formal way to say we want to go to the toilet?@J.R. There's an awful lot in the question for English language enthusiasts. The way "U/non-U" distinctions meant that upper class people preferred "toilet" (if referring to it at all was necessary) while middle-class people preferred "lavatory" or being euphemistic, along with different views as to what counted as "formal", and then how those distinctions changed over time, as just one aspect.

- word choice - "Toilet", "lavatory" or "loo" for polite society ...Both lavatory and loo are fine, and it's meaningless to talk about which is correct or more correct, IMHO. Interestingly, these terms are quite strong class indicators in the UK: loo is more often used by middle class speakers than, for instance, toilet.
- american english - Is it really rude to use the terms "the john" and ...'Lavatory' is the 'matter of fact' term that sanitary engineers would us if planning some of the public variety - 'public lavatories'. Aircraft toilets are often called 'lavatories'. I'm not sure why. 'Public convenience' (a bit dated) is the euphemism for a public lavatory.
