Bookmark or Share- Meaning of "by" when used with dates - inclusive or exclusiveOn the other hand, sometimes the ambiguity is irrelevant, no matter which convention governed it, if a bottle of milk said "Best f used by August 10th", you couldn't get me to drink it on that date. TL;DR : it's ambiguous.
- word choice - "On the last week" or "In the last week"? - English ...He's going to quit in August. Your sentence specifies that a plane will be arriving some time in the last week of August. Since this is a nonspecific time, you would say: I'll arrive in the last week of August. If, however, you do choose to say that you'll arrive exactly on the 29th of August, this is a specific day so you would say:

I read an article that we use last before a specific past time reference such as Monday. So day in a week are never preceded by THE LAST but just by LAST apart from if it is a specific reference in time e.g.

I guarentee you though, it definitely means before the end of the business day August 18, 2011, whatever hour that may be, and more than likely does not mean until midnight the following day unless they have 24 hour receiving.

If you wanted to talk about the first week that was entirely in April, you would refer to the first full week in April. The same goes for the last full week of April--it is the last week entirely contained within April.
