Twenty Years of Mobile Communications in North Korea
The government gave mobile phones a second chance in 2008 when it awarded Egypt’s Orascom Technology a contract to launch a 3G network. The service, called Koryolink, started in December 2008 and is still in operation today. Orascom owns a 75 percent stake in the network, with the North Korean government holding the remaining 25 percent.

Is North Korea finally getting 4G?
Upgrading to 4G would bring big improvements. The Koryolink network is capable of data speeds around 1Mbps at present but 4G networks can typically transfer data at ten times that. That could be useful as the state continues to expand network and broadcasting access deep into the country.
