To the south the main threat were the Japanese pirates. The Kingdom of Joseon didn't really need a large military to face these threats and economically probably did not have the funds to keep a huge army around doing nothing.

- Korean armor is best armor - History ForumJapanese armor was first passed on from Korea along with iron working technology, so it is no wonder. Chinese armor is well suited for infantry warfare, but Korea had the best heavy cavalry armor during Koguryeo era, and then the best cavalry archer armor for the Joseon era.
