Bookmark or Share- Jones's or Jones'? - English Language & Usage Stack ExchangeI've always heard that when talking about stuff belonging to either a Jones or many Jones, you'd write Jones' (pronounced "Joneses"). But recently I've stumbled upon a book which consistently uses Jones's when talking of a single Jones.
- Where did "I'm Jonesing" get its meaning from?Location-based folk etymologies. I am not persuaded by the claim (evidently proposed by the Online Rap Dictionary some 37 years after the earliest instance of jones that Lighter cites) that jones originally alluded to Jones Alley in Manhattan.
- "Welcome to the Jones__": Plural or Plural Possessive?For that reason I would go with Jones'. If you are just pluralizing Jones, then, yes, it's Joneses. As in, "We are the Joneses.". In your case you are wanting a sign that indicates it's the home of the Jones family, the home you possess or own. So, Jones', whether you explicitly use the word house/home or not, seems to be the right word.
