In medieval morality plays in England and in the Dutch/Low Saxon-speaking regions, "Everyman" or "Anyman" were used in a similar way to John Doe. The legal use of John Doe (originally used almost exclusively for a fictitious plaintiff) and Richard Roe (for a defendant) extend into time immemorial in English Law (that is, before 1189.)
