Bookmark or Share- James' or James's - Creative Writing ForumsFrom what I understand, to make a singular noun possessive, it would be James's. "The ball was James's toy". To make a plural noun possessive, it would be just the apostrophe, as in "the twins' parents".
- James' or James's | Page 2 - Creative Writing Forums" You'd say. "Henry James's novel, The Turning of the Screw." Wouldn't you? Or 'the Jones's picket fence,' rather than 'the Jones picket fence.' I think it makes sense to actually say it out loud or to yourself, and ask yourself if you're pronouncing the extra 's' or not.
- Possessive apostrophe and names ending in "s". - Writing ForumsI always struggle with James's as well. My rather excellent grammar book ("My Grammar and I (or should that be me?") says James's, not James'. The author argues that at one time in the history of the English language, it would have been written Jameses and so, having dropped the "e", we need to add the apostrophe to mark the missing "e".
