Bookmark or Share- pronunciation - Is there any difference between a syllabic R /ɹ̩/ and r ...In my opinion these two sounds are similar in that they are both only slightly rhotic, and they are dissimilar in that the second, as the symbol shows, starts as an allophone of schwa, while the first does not, or, if it does, this allophone is barely perceptible (again, as the symbol would tend to confirm), the sound being apparently the beginning of an r.

I can't think of a context in which choosing one over the other makes any semantic difference. This example needs continued/ing consideration. –

- Perhaps a Hanlon's Razor, but what does it mean?The rule that you quoted actually reads, "Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice", and is known as Grey's Law, though it seems recent in origin and there seems to be no record of a person named Grey saying it, nor any verifiable reference linking it to a person named Grey.
