Historically, "her" was commonly used as a pronoun for not only women, but also for both countries and ships (e.g. sailing vessels). However, that usage has more or less fallen out of favor, and instead "its" has become the preferred pronoun. Nevertheless, you'll still see "she" or "her" used depending on the preferences of the author.
- Is it grammatically correct to use his, her, or his/her?Personally, when I want to use "gender-nonspecific" pronouns, I stick with their.To me, it in no way specifies a certain gender, unlike his and her, which are obviously used to describe male and female nouns, respectively.
- Which is correct: "This is her" or "This is she"? [duplicate]Traditional grammarians prefer the nominative ("she") for the complement of the verb "to be". Most usage in my experience prefers the accusative ("her") and regards the verb as having a direct object rather than a complement. I suspect the traditional grammarians, as they often did, have misapplied a rule of Latin grammar.

In English, grammar is descriptive not prescriptive, so whatever is accepted as correct, is correct. In common speech, it is much more usual to say "as her" or "as me" rather than "as she" or "as I".
- Is there a correct gender-neutral singular pronoun ("his" vs. "her" vs ...Binary usages like his/her, were not offensive to most speakers. And, in cases where people wanted an alternative, the most common uses were the singular they or one substitutions. Other past attempts at coining a new system were largely ignored, laughed at, or downright rejected as unnecessary.
