There is far worse out there. At the time it was published. There wasn't a lot of inquisitor styled books out there. Eisenhorn and the FFG RPG novels were you're only options after Ian's book.

- Rereading Ian Watson's Space Marine : r/40kLore - RedditSquats. Just Squats. barely described apart from being from high gravity worlds. However I know the Draco Trilogy (also by Watson) also had a Squat, who was the engineer of the ship. Imperial Fists seem very easily surprised, and make some stupid decisions. Hardly the impossible to surprise and unflappable marines from the later books.

The first book, in particular, is a very good look at what 40k originally was in the transitionary years between RT and 2nd Edition; very much a Sword-And-Sorcery-In-Space kind of thing.
