"Hundreds of" and "thousands of" are more common than "tens of", but if I heard the statement, I would expect "tens of" to be 30 to about 120 or so. A more common phrase for the same general amount is "dozens of".

The noun trees is countable and plural. thousand is an adjective in this example. Even if you don't say "trees" its still implied. But you could say: There are thousands and thousands of trees."

It's vague but huge (relatively), but "hundreds and thousands of" is illogical and semantically untenable. If you say "Hundreds and thousands of protesters gathered in the square", you're obviously equivocating ("attempting to deceive").
