The possibility of a fault due to a poor connection is great enough that actually connecting pin 2 to a ground trace is worth the effort.

There are better methods but this is inside a closed up tight linear RF amplifier with a finned aluminum heatsink for a case without any internal airflow cooling. Planing on adding some exterior muffin fans.
