Bookmark or Share- "At hand" vs "on hand" vs "in hand" - English Language & Usage Stack ...In hand mainly focuses on abstract things or uncountable things, it can be a situation in hand, an hour in hand, some money in hand, a topic in hand etc... (compare with "in question": the man in question is guilty of ~ the topic in hand is a delicate one). Examples: 1) Pupils have over half an hour in hand = left/available/to spare.
- Academic way of saying "On the other hand"@jprete: I think it's fine with using "on the other hand" by all means, just that I have 2 consideration here. 1) I wish to have a less verbose tone. 2) Like Anthony mentioned below, I don't really have a first hand for my the other hand. –
- Any alternative to "on the one hand, on the other hand"The discourse marker, or sentence connector used by the OP; "on the one hand ... on the other hand" expresses two contrasting ideas, opinions or facts. It is a perfectly acceptable expression in formal papers; however, there is nothing to prevent it from being shortened to “on the other hand”. Nevertheless, I suggest the following alternatives:
- Which is better equivalent for “in stock”? “At hand”, “on hand”, or “in ..."at hand" means "easily available" and could just as easily refer to an inanimate object or a person. "on hand" means "in our inventory", so it's probably closest to "in stock". "in hand" means "I'm literally holding the object right now."
