Hans Ruedi Giger (/ ˈɡiːɡər / GHEE-gər; German: [ˈɡiːɡɐ]; 5 February 1940 – 12 May 2014) was a Swiss artist best known for his airbrushed images that blended human physiques with machines, an art style known as "biomechanical".

H. R. Giger is recognized as one of the world’s foremost artists of Fantastic Realism. Born in 1940 to a chemist’s family in Chur, Switzerland, he moved in 1962 to Zurich, where he studied architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts.

After numerous visits to the 400-year-old walled medieval town of Gruyères, HR Giger fell in love with this wonderful region. And when he learned that the Château St. Germain, the fortress located further down, was for sale, the idea was born to establish his own museum and center for fantastic art.

As many of you now have heard, “Hans Ruedi” Giger, known to the World as H.R. Giger, passed away yesterday at the age of 74. We are absolutely heartbroken over the loss of this loving husband, selfless friend, and supremely talented artist.
