The idea was to make the Standard a little brighter, and I think they do behave that way. It's not a prominent difference, though. Pickups and your amp are going to have the biggest impact.

There's no way you're going to have neck dive with a Les Paul regardless of weight relief. The nice thing about buying used is that you can ask about the weight, if that's a concern. I've seen LP Studios as light as 7 lbs 3 oz.
