Bookmark or Share- Distance shooting Geese - Duck Hunting ForumShort story: Last season went to a hunting spot and watched couple of flocks (geese) fly over at 50 yds. just out of range. I use a nice hitting number 4 at 1450 to 1500 and get a good count of 180 average at 40 yds. that is where I shoot 40 yds, no farther.

I think it helped that it was young of the year and it was almost all pin feathers. But usually don't take shots like that. Max is usually 50yrds if its honkers. If its snow geese I would say 60yrds. In Federal Hulls using the MM1035 1 3/8oz of BBB 85 pellets, 45-47gr of steel powder, Fed209a. It takes one 12ga 1/4" felt. will run 1500-1600fps. If this load will not kill the geese, You missed or they where beyond 65yrds if you get it to pattern well.

I was trying to keep the recoil very light so I went with 1/2 ounce of 8.5 shot. I prefer to use #7 TSS for geese, but with only 1/2 ounce of payload, I decided to use #8.5 to get more pellet count.
