frieze, in Greco-Roman Classical architecture, the middle of the three main divisions of an entablature (section resting on the capital). The frieze is above the architrave and below the cornice (in a position that could be quite difficult to view).

In interiors, the frieze of a room is the section of wall above the picture rail and under the crown moldings or cornice. By extension, a frieze is a long stretch of painted, sculpted or even calligraphic decoration in such a position, normally above eye-level.

The frieze was sculpted between 443 and 438 BC. Its design was the work of the sculptor Pheidias, but its carving was executed by some of his most famous pupils. The frieze’s subject is believed to be the procession of the Greater Panathenaia, the most important festival held in honour of the city’s divine patroness Athena.
