Francis Ashbury Pratt (February 15, 1827 – February 10, 1902) was an American mechanical engineer, inventor, and co-founder of Pratt & Whitney.

Francis Pratt (1827-1902), U.S. mechanical engineer and machine-tool manufacturer. Francis Ashbury Pratt was the founder of Pratt & Whitney. He founded the company with Amos Whitney in 1860 in Hartford, CT. He is credited with being first to permit production of fine gear work.

Francis A. Pratt (1827-1902) Pratt was born in Woodstock Vt., served a seven-year apprenticeship, and then spent four years as a contractor at Gloucester Machine Works before moving to the Colt plant in Hartford, Conn. Two years later, he became superintendent of the Phoenix Iron Works in Hartford.
