All ex-presidents, while retaining many of the perks of office, are in demand as six-figure per speech speakers, as multi-million dollar authors, etc. See #2 - most feel they have earned a comfortable retirement. Politics is nasty business. It hasn't gotten more pleasant over the past few decades.
