$\begingroup$ @M.Ebsim You could have taken any two positive numbers $\epsilon_1$ and $\epsilon_2$ that satisfy $\epsilon_1 + \epsilon_2 \leq \epsilon$; choosing $\epsilon_1 = \epsilon_2 = \epsilon/2$ is just the simplest and most aesthetically pleasing choice. $\endgroup$ More @Wikipedia
