Bookmark or Share- Cold Winter for Chinese Elm? - Bonsai NutI've looked around online and found conflicting information regarding the winter-hardiness of Chinese elms. Some things suggest they're just fine in full winter outdoors (below 0ºF) as long as their protected, others say they should be brought in for winter, or that they're only good for mild winters.
- Leaves of the Chinese Elm in winter: to leave or not?Here in NC, they drop, but later than just about all my other deciduous. Even today (Dec 5) I'd say only about half of my Chinese elm leaves have fallen off the trees. Compare that to my American elms, winged elms, cedar elms, silver elms, English elms - all of which dropped a month or more ago.
- how long a dormant period for Chinese elm - Bonsai NutChinese elms do not require a hard dormant period, and can be treated as a tropical with no ill effects. I keep Chinese elms outside year round here in Southern California, and though they drop leaves for about a month, the temperature never falls below about 38-40.
- Airlayered American elms - Bonsai NutAmerican Elms (except for Dutch Elm disease) are virtually indestructible. They can be drastically root pruned and will bud back like crazy. They will also reduce their leaf size especially if you constantly pinch back the new shoots. I grow them in straight Turface. They seem to love it.
- Defoliate Chinese Elms - Bonsai NutWhen my elms started to turn at the end of December, I defoliated them. If you choose to do so yours, you can minimize damage to the bud by 1) waiting until they start to turn because the petiole weakens at that time and 2) pulling the leaves backward along the branch.
