Antwerp, the centre of trade dominated the region for a long time, but was eventually overshadowed by Amsterdam. There are many historians, Dutch among them, who credit the rise of the Dutch Republic and with it Amsterdam to the fall of Antwerp. Although the north was never poor under the Burgundian rulers, it was outclassed by the wealthy south. More @Wikipedia
