The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is a law that prohibited married same-sex couples from collecting federal benefits. The Supreme Court overruled it on June 26, 2015, by the decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. This ruling cited the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. More @Wikipedia
