DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was the consummate New York politician. In his lifetime, he served in the state legislature, as mayor of New York City, and even briefly as a United States senator. His biggest role in the history of New York State was as governor, and as orchestrator of the Erie Canal. More @Wikipedia
