Chitimacha Nation. The Chitimacha Indian Tribe, also known as the “People of the Many Waters,” has lived in Louisiana’s bayou country for centuries. They have been the caretakers of the region for generations, long before Europeans arrived. Their story is an important part of American history.
Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana - 64 Parishes
The Chitimacha Tribe is the only federally recognized tribe to retain and occupy part of its ancestral territory within the present state of Louisiana. It was the first Louisiana tribe to gain federal recognition in 1916, with the remaining tract of Chitimacha land in St. Mary Parish placed in trust by the United States in 1919.

The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana is the only tribe in Louisiana to still occupy a portion of their aboriginal homeland. The Chitimacha, according to oral history, “have always been here.” Unfortunately, over thousands of years the Chitimacha land base has significantly decreased.
