Charles Bent, Governor, Facts, Significance - American History Central
Charles Bent was a fur trader, merchant, and politician who rose to prominence during the Fur Trade Era and became the first Governor of the New Mexico Territory. He is most well-known for his trade ties to Santa Fe and his death during the Taos Revolt.

Charles Bent (born Nov. 11, 1799, Charleston, Va. [now in West Virginia], U.S.—died Jan. 19, 1847, Taos [New Mexico]) was a fur-trading pioneer who became civil governor for the United States of the newly captured province of New Mexico.

Charles Bent moved on west and south, ultimately becoming the first governor of New Mexico Territory, appointed by Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny in September 1846. He settled in Taos and his leadership lasted until January 19, 1847, when he was killed during the Taos Revolt.
