Alpha Centauri A and B are similar in size and mass to the Sun, while Proxima Centauri is a smaller, cooler red dwarf star. The three stars are gravitationally bound together, with Alpha Centauri A and B orbiting each other in a close binary system, and Proxima Centauri orbiting the pair at a greater distance.
