Modern Shanghai was born on August 29, 1842 under the (unequal) Treaty of Nanjing. Eighty years later, it was a booming city of 3 million inhabitants. West of the walled Chinese city, an International Concession and a French Concession (1849-1943) were carved out, both with extraterritorial privileges. More @Wikipedia
