Bookmark or Share- Block and tackle mast climb | Sailboat Owners ForumsI've been using a block & tackle system to go aloft since 1969. I'd suggest 5:1 unless you are really strong and young. Don't forget to add a couple of lines with quality carabiners to secure your bosun's chair when working aloft and to clip on to shrouds as you go, as safety lines.

When we want to set it up on the dinghy, we move the dinghy to the side of the boat. Connect a block/tackle to the boom, and to the harness. Lift up the outboard over the lifelines, and down to the dinghy.

I can pull myself up easily. Coming down is a matter of untying the knot and repelling down. - Threading block & tackle... - Sailboat Owners ForumsA gun tackle is when you use two blocks (top and bottom) and a luft tackle is when you use three blocks (top middle and bottom) As a general rule you want the working end of the line attached to either the top or bottom line and then immediately go to the outside sheve on the other block followed by the outside sheve on the block you started with.
- Climbing the Mast - Sailboat Owners ForumsP.S. Has anyone ever seen a professional rigger use anything but a bosun's chair and a multi purchase block and tackle to pull himself up. A climbing harness maybe.. but the chair allows them to swing out to the spreader tips or around to the back side of the mast.. You can't do that on a static line.
