Bells date back to 2000 B.C. and were first rung in China. The Chinese rung them for worshiping, making announcements, and for alerting people during times of danger. They also spread the use of metal bells to other countries such as Japan, India, and Thailand for their practices of Buddhism and Hinduism. More @Wikipedia
